Structural Steel Fabrication 

Steel Fabrication is the procedure utilized to fabricate and manufacture steelwork parts and components when put together, assembled and joined, form a complete steel frame also used for mechanical equipment. The steel frames and structure in generally uses readily available standard steel sections which are manufactured and purchased from the steelmakers or steel stockholder, together with these items as protective coatings/paintings and nuts and bolts from other specialized manufacturers & suppliers.

Even though a vast range of steel sections shapes and sizes are manufactured in Steel Structure, the Steel Structure designer may find that the needed section size is not available for Steel Structure Fabrication to meet the requirements. In such instance, built-up girders/beams may be made & fabricated from plate.

Structural Steel fabrication includes the procedures and principles, knowledge and skills related with other types of field construction inspection.

Structural Steel Fabrication Procedure

The actual fabrication of steel structure begins when the final approved drawings reach the shop fabrication floor and continues through field erection until the structure is put to use.

Material Inspection

All steel should be inspected in the receiving yard of the fabricator as it is delivered from the  supplier.

Structural Steel Materials preparation

Flatness, Straightness, Sweep, Cross Section Rolled material before being laid out or worked must be straight. Permissible variations for steel as received from the rolling mill are established by standards for structural steel fabrication. The straightening is necessary, it to be done by methods that will not injure the metal, produce fractures or other injury.

Structural Steel Materials Cutting

This procedure should be performed in accordance with Standard Specifications. A mechanical guide should be used at all times to secure an accurate profile.

Gouges which occur during flame cutting must be ground or filled in with weld metal and ground

smooth and flush. The fabricator should have a pre-approved weld procedure for making these

repairs. Edge preparation of plates for welding must be closely checked.

Structural Steel Materials FIT-UP

Girders & Beams

Girder flange and web plates should be reasonably straight.  The shop Inspector for Steel Structure Fabrication is cautioned to check for the specified welding joint. Some girders are designed with full penetration web to flange plate welds or bearing stiffener to web and flange plate welds. The welding joint on these plates must be beveled as per specs. for Steel Structure fabricaion

Welding of Structural Steel Materials

Welding Procedures (WPS)

Qualification of welding procedure specifications (WPS) should be established

before welding begins. The fabricator may be required to run additional tests to qualify WPS for the contract. WPS qualified by tests in accordance with applicable standard should be recorded on the Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) form. The test should be witnessed by another party

Non-Destructive Weld Testing – for Structural Steel Fabrication

Non-destructive testing of weldments is the responsibility of the fabricator and is witnessed

by the Inspector. The fabricator supplies all equipment, personnel and test methods to perform the nondestructive testing.

Assemble & Drill – Steel Structure Parts

The last operation prior to cleaning and painting is shop assembly of the structural steel items girders and beams so that splices can be reamed or drilled to final size.
